Medicaid | The Lived Experience:
Low-Income Parents
Florida’s Medicaid program provides Medicaid coverage for very low-income parents with minor children. For parents of children under 18, eligibility is limited to those whose income is approximately 32% of the federal poverty level, which is less than $500/month for a single parent with one child.
Parents lose their vital healthcare coverage if their income rises above this meager amount or when their youngest child turns 18.

When her non-profit employer downsized in March 2020, Jamie lost her job and her ability to pay the monthly premium for her private insurance plan. Without income, she no longer qualified for a federal subsidy for her Affordable Care Act insurance policy.
